Biography – A relative late-starter in the motorsport world, Richard Heistand only came to racing in 2005 at the age of 21 – but success has been swift. After registering at a Skip Barber Racing School, he went on to enter the Skip Barber National Championship that same year with just one prior race under his belt. Placing inside the top ten in the overall standings both that season and the next, Richard served notice of his potential with victory at Road America in 2006, five podium finishes and a pole position.

In 2007, the Floridian stepped up a level to the Champ Car Atlantic series – a well-regarded North American proving ground, with a field that year that included the likes of future IndyCar stars Robert Wickens and James Hinchcliffe – prior to taking an extended, decade-long break from the sport. Between 2008 and 2017, he made only sporadic appearances on-track, highlighted by a top ten finish during a one-off Star Mazda Championship outing in 2011.

Unable to shake the bug, in 2018, Richard made his full-time return to the sport he loves and shifted his focus to Europe, contesting the full Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup campaign with MRS Cup-Racing while broadening his experience with selected races in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and VLN Endurance Championship. In 2019, a return to home soil beckoned, as the Orlando native signed up to a full season with AIM Vasser Sullivan in IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Sharing the team’s factory-backed Lexus RC F GT3 with former IndyCar driver Jack Hawksworth, Richard sped to two race wins, four further top six finishes and a pole position in the fiercely-contested GTD category. That was enough to place the pair sixth in the overall classification and third in the Sprint Cup standings.

The American dovetailed his IMSA commitments with starts in the 24H SERIES’ Championship of the Continents in a Volt Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R. Along with both the Intercontinental GT Challenge and Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup with Strakka Racing in a Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Here Richard reached the Pro-Am class podium in the latter on his 24 Hours of Spa debut.

In 2020, Richard is once again contesting the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s GTD class, now behind the wheel of GRT Grasser Racing Team’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo. We hope this Biography has proved to be a useful insight into Richard Heistand.
